In his book Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, Jules Verne describes a monster in the likeness of a whale, which the protagonists set out to hunt. In battle, they are forced to climb onto the monster’s back, only to find that it is actually an advanced electrically powered submarine commanded and built by Captain Nemo. The vessel, named Nautilus, is described as having features that were ahead of the scientific state of the art. Although there is no consensus on the real correlation between the book and scientific progress in submarine technology, Verne inspired many generations of writers and scientists to think beyond the boundaries of their time.
