I could not believe what I was seeing. The room was packed, the lights were on, and the scenario was set. Next to me sat a woman I had just met, next to her another woman, and so on, until my eyes blurred at the sea of people. No, it’s not a concert that I’m describing; it’s the annual Grace Hopper Celebration (GHC), one of the largest worldwide conferences of women in technology. Coming from my university, where the ratio of women to men is one to five, I’m used to being surrounded by men. I think that’s the case for most women in technical fields. That’s why seeing more than 25,000 women in a single room was refreshing.
