The importance of the advisor–advisee relationship in graduate school

Have you ever felt uneasy in a relationship, but you could not figure out the exact problem? My advisor was quiet and passive for a while, and he kept hiding his concerns until I met with him to fill out my annual review form, which was required by the department to evaluate the progress of graduate students from the viewpoint of their advisor. I had the toughest conversation with my advisor that day, and it led me to examine the importance of the advisor–advisee relationship. I talked to many faculty members and graduate students about their experiences regarding this issue after that meeting. Little by little, I noticed that the main reason for that tough conversation was my advisor’s concerns about my success, but it was hard for me to understand that in the beginning.

Characteristics of social robots: A framework for development

Social robots hold great promise for assisting both older adults with dementia and those in good health. Yet, little is known about how people want to interact with these robots. This article introduces a framework for the key features social robots should have, based on insights from a four-month study of how seniors engage with robots through conversation and interaction. We have broken these features down into principles of robot behavior, verbal communication, and nonverbal communication, while also considering factors that affect a person’s likelihood to adopt such technology. Our findings offer a starting point for refining social robots and & developing features that truly resonate with users.
