Editorial—Unity and disagreement: Two sides of the same coin

Very few people will disagree that the ability to work in a team is one of the most important soft skills for a professional. There are many reasons why teamwork is so important. First, we live in a society with industries and organizations composed of different people . . . very different people. Second, institutions are organized into departments, divisions, sectors, and so on. However, perhaps the most important reason is on the fact that, although our qualifications direct our knowledge for a very specific area, real and complex problems require the combination and integration of different fields. This means that people need to work together to crack down on the continuous challenges that all of us must face.

Characteristics of social robots: A framework for development

Social robots hold great promise for assisting both older adults with dementia and those in good health. Yet, little is known about how people want to interact with these robots. This article introduces a framework for the key features social robots should have, based on insights from a four-month study of how seniors engage with robots through conversation and interaction. We have broken these features down into principles of robot behavior, verbal communication, and nonverbal communication, while also considering factors that affect a person’s likelihood to adopt such technology. Our findings offer a starting point for refining social robots and & developing features that truly resonate with users.
