IEEE at Boğaziçi University: Empowering innovation and diversity from Türkiye around the globe [IEEE Student Activities]

September 15, 2024 by Selin Çoklar

Boğaziçi University, in Istanbul, is considered one of the top schools in Türkiye. Established in 1863, the school has become a beacon for free thinking and modern youth. This unique atmosphere is primarily owed to the culture cultivated by renowned academicians and scientists who ensure a general appreciation for democracy and participatory democracy. In other words, the perspective they provide stimulates the well-preserved, student-driven nature of the campus. Much like a great tree with many roots, Boğaziçi owes its rich environment to numerous elements, with student clubs and societies being prime examples. With most clubs and societies founded over 50 years ago, students today can explore their interests, make professional connections, and connect with like-minded peers through these social communities. The Boğaziçi University IEEE Student Branch, whose collective history spans an astonishing 63 years as of 2024, remains one of the prominent platforms where students develop their technical knowledge and create lasting memories.

Privacy implications of facial recognition technology

Facial recognition technology (FRT) has experienced enormous growth and rapid deployment across different sectors of the society in recent years, mostly motivated by safety, security, and commercial applications. However, major privacy questions arise around this technology, and regulators are still working to provide clear set of rules governing its use. This paper focuses on privacy implications of FRT usage. Specifically, we first present the definition of FRT, followed by an analysis of the vulnerability and risks that can potentially arise and how they might be concerning in such context. Finally, we discuss efforts needed to mitigate privacy concerns related to FRT, from both technical and regulatory perspectives.
