This short opinion essay discusses research ethics and publication integrity from a Ph.D. student’s perspective.
Being a science, technology, engineering, and mathematics student, I have attended research ethics courses where various unethical practices, such as plagiarism, self-plagiarism, abusive self-citations, and data manipulation, were extensively discussed to ensure students refrain from such behaviors. Throughout the years of my study, all of my professors have consistently emphasized the importance of academic integrity. During exams, students are required to sign an integrity statement affirming that we approached the exams with honesty and without any form of cheating.
