A tourist guide to ethical artificial intelligence usage

July 12, 2025 by Benjamin Ekow Attabra

Abstract:
Artificial intelligence (AI) is no longer just in sci-fi movies or comics. It is the tiny voice in your phone called a voice assistant, the recommendations you see when you open your favorite streaming service, and your car’s driver. As AI systems subtly thread themselves into our daily lives, they carry not only impressive capabilities and convenience but also adverse effects. From deciding who is going to get a loan to identifying faces in public domains, AI systems increasingly influence our world and not always for the better. For this reason, ethical AI is concerning not just for philosophers or policy makers but for me and you, the builders. It is an important tool in our arsenal as engineers, designers, developers, and decision makers building the future today.

Privacy implications of facial recognition technology

Facial recognition technology (FRT) has experienced enormous growth and rapid deployment across different sectors of the society in recent years, mostly motivated by safety, security, and commercial applications. However, major privacy questions arise around this technology, and regulators are still working to provide clear set of rules governing its use. This paper focuses on privacy implications of FRT usage. Specifically, we first present the definition of FRT, followed by an analysis of the vulnerability and risks that can potentially arise and how they might be concerning in such context. Finally, we discuss efforts needed to mitigate privacy concerns related to FRT, from both technical and regulatory perspectives.
