IEEE Potentials Theme Issue on IoT Evolution

IEEE Potential is the IEEE’s global magazine for students, with a circulation of over 140,000 readers. Our upcoming themed issue will focus on IoT Innovation. We invite submissions that focus on these critical areas, encouraging authors to explore innovative ideas and solutions. We especially encourage IEEE volunteers at all levels to share their outreach efforts to raise awareness of important AI ethics and cybersecurity issues. The topics of interest for this Special Issue include (but are not limited to):

  • Emerging cybersecurity challenges in IoT and interconnected systems
  • Ethical considerations in AI-enabled IoT ecosystems
  • Privacy and data protection in large-scale IoT environments
  • Bias mitigation and fairness in intelligent IoT systems
  • Responsible development of autonomous IoT devices
  • Regulatory frameworks and governance for IoT
  • Inclusive, accessible, and human-centered design in IoT

Submission of Papers:

Prospective authors are invited to submit articles of up to 4,000 words. Articles should be aimed at a student audience and should not represent original research. The Potentials style requires no abstract, no citations from within the main text, and minimal equations, but liberal use of relevant, captioned illustrations and photographs is encouraged. Privacy implications of facial recognition technology

Facial recognition technology (FRT) has experienced enormous growth and rapid deployment across different sectors of the society in recent years, mostly motivated by safety, security, and commercial applications. However, major privacy questions arise around this technology, and regulators are still working to provide clear set of rules governing its use. This paper focuses on privacy implications of FRT usage. Specifically, we first present the definition of FRT, followed by an analysis of the vulnerability and risks that can potentially arise and how they might be concerning in such context. Finally, we discuss efforts needed to mitigate privacy concerns related to FRT, from both technical and regulatory perspectives.
