Science, engineering, technology, and culture

August 24, 2022 by

The purpose of this article is to provide an explanation for a paradoxical phenomenon that we observe on a daily basis—that is, the coexistence of sublime understanding and absurd ignorance. We would also like to discuss why we question our prejudices so rarely; why, after so much evidence in favor of scientific work, we tend to have more confidence in polls and opinions; why … [Read more...] about Science, engineering, technology, and culture

IEEE pre-university science, technology, engineering, and mathematics outreach: Share. Give back. Inspire

August 24, 2022 by

Did you know that, according to Wikipedia, Nicola Tesla became interested in demonstrations of electricity conducted by his physics professor? He later wrote that the demonstrations of these “mysterious phenomena” made him want “to know more of this wonderful force.” Exposing students to new technologies and how they work might be what it takes to spark a student’s curiosity … [Read more...] about IEEE pre-university science, technology, engineering, and mathematics outreach: Share. Characteristics of social robots: A framework for development

Social robots hold great promise for assisting both older adults with dementia and those in good health. Yet, little is known about how people want to interact with these robots. This article introduces a framework for the key features social robots should have, based on insights from a four-month study of how seniors engage with robots through conversation and interaction. We have broken these features down into principles of robot behavior, verbal communication, and nonverbal communication, while also considering factors that affect a person’s likelihood to adopt such technology. Our findings offer a starting point for refining social robots and & developing features that truly resonate with users.
