Integrating sustainability into STEM curricula

September 15, 2024 by Sudhir K. Routray, and Sasmita Mohanty

In this article, we explore the imperative of incorporating sustainability principles into Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education, emphasizing the interdisciplinary nature of sustainable development. The integration of sustainability into STEM curriculum represents a transformative approach to education that addresses the pressing global challenges … [Read more...] about Integrating sustainability into STEM curricula

Advancing conservation: Internet of Things-driven initiatives for marine animal rescue due to climate changes [Climate Change]

March 6, 2024 by Rahul Sanmugam Gopi, Rajkumar Ramasamy, M. David Honesty Babu

Beneath the expansive oceans lies a complex ecosystem where marine animals, from whales to delicate coral polyps, sustain the vitality of the marine environment. However, these creatures are facing significant challenges due to evolving climate changes. Rising sea temperatures, ocean acidification, habitat degradation, and increasing natural disasters threaten their … [Read more...] about Advancing conservation: Internet of Things-driven initiatives for marine animal rescue due to climate changes [Climate Change]

Atmospheric correction: Sentinel for data in remote sensing-based climate change analysis [Climate Change]

March 6, 2024 by Maitrik Shah, Mehul S. Raval, Srikrishnan Divakaran

Climate change is a complex phenomenon influenced by various natural and human-induced factors, contributing to climate changes that affect global and regional weather patterns. Natural events that cause changes in sunlight, volcanoes, and the Earth’s orbit have influenced the climate gradually and have been studied and understood over a long period. Human-induced factors like … [Read more...] about Atmospheric correction: Sentinel for data in remote sensing-based climate change analysis [Climate Change]

Science in fantasy and the fantasy of certainty

May 12, 2022 by Lee Hunt

floating over world in stadium

The fantasy series The Dynamicist Trilogy ( TDT ) examines moral and scientific questions concerning the desire to change the world. Readers are challenged to consider whether there is a more ubiquitous notion than changing the world in the news or on the minds of people today. We are concerned with climate change, overpopulation, disease, economics, social justice, … [Read more...] about Science in fantasy and the fantasy of certainty

Privacy implications of facial recognition technology

Facial recognition technology (FRT) has experienced enormous growth and rapid deployment across different sectors of the society in recent years, mostly motivated by safety, security, and commercial applications. However, major privacy questions arise around this technology, and regulators are still working to provide clear set of rules governing its use. This paper focuses on privacy implications of FRT usage. Specifically, we first present the definition of FRT, followed by an analysis of the vulnerability and risks that can potentially arise and how they might be concerning in such context. Finally, we discuss efforts needed to mitigate privacy concerns related to FRT, from both technical and regulatory perspectives.
