June 28, 2022 by Pamela Bhatti; Srini Tridandapani

There are powerful quotes egging us on to embrace failure. LeBron James, a world-renowned basketball superstar, philanthropist, parent, and businessman, asserts, “You can’t be afraid to fail. It’s the only way you succeed.” Wayne Gretzky, a world-class hockey player, unequivocally states, “You miss 100% of shots you don’t take,” clearly conveying that one defaults to failure by … [Read more...] about Designing your failure portfolio: Capacity building for lifelong learning

Epic product fails of history

June 28, 2022 by Greg Linton

Rejected with an X next to it

When we first think of failure, we often go to our own personal stories. Sometimes, however, those failures are brought into the public view. As a reminder that even famous companies are made up of fallible people, the following are some short case studies of epic product failures. That success rate does not really provide any insight into the cost of the space program in the years before, which cannot be measured in simply the … [Read more...] about The high cost of success

It forced me to go through strong and stressful dilemmas, and I had to reconnect to my set of personal values and ethics to redefine success and recover. By sharing this event with you, just the way I experienced it, I hope you will understand how I felt and that it will help you understand … [Read more...] about Success: Forged by values, decorated by failures

Characteristics of social robots: A framework for development

Social robots hold great promise for assisting both older adults with dementia and those in good health. Yet, little is known about how people want to interact with these robots. This article introduces a framework for the key features social robots should have, based on insights from a four-month study of how seniors engage with robots through conversation and interaction. We have broken these features down into principles of robot behavior, verbal communication, and nonverbal communication, while also considering factors that affect a person’s likelihood to adopt such technology. Our findings offer a starting point for refining social robots and & developing features that truly resonate with users.
