E-waste management in the digital era: A sustainable computing approach [Climate Change]

March 6, 2024 by Rajkumar Ramasamy, Rahul Sanmugam Gopi, Rohini Palanisamy

In the digital era, the proliferation of electronic devices has led to a surge in electronic waste (e-waste), posing significant environmental and health challenges. This article proposes a sustainable computing approach to e-waste management. The article explores the complexities of e-waste management and recycling frameworks within the context of sustainable computing and … [Read more...] about E-waste management in the digital era: A sustainable computing approach [Climate Change]

Monitoring water health with autonomous single-rotor unmanned aerial vehicles

March 2, 2023 by Ankit Bhat

Harmful algae blooms (HABs) regularly occur in the Great Lakes in Canada, particularly in Lake Erie. These HABs produce a toxin called microcystin , which can cause liver damage, numbness, and vomiting in both humans and animals (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration [NOAA], 2017). Lake Erie experienced one of its worst HABs in 2019. These HABs do not show signs of … [Read more...] about Monitoring water health with autonomous single-rotor unmanned aerial vehicles

Testing satellite control systems with drones

January 1, 2022 by Ali Barari, Ryan Dion, Ian Jeffrey and Philip Ferguson

Image of a cube in space.

In space, it is usually not possible to repair equipment when things go wrong. While astronauts ventured into space aboard the Space Shuttle to repair the infamously flawed Hubble Space Telescope, these types of repair missions are extremely expensive and rare. Limited repair options make spacecraft engineers turn their attention to reliability in an attempt to … [Read more...] about Testing satellite control systems with drones

Characteristics of social robots: A framework for development

Social robots hold great promise for assisting both older adults with dementia and those in good health. Yet, little is known about how people want to interact with these robots. This article introduces a framework for the key features social robots should have, based on insights from a four-month study of how seniors engage with robots through conversation and interaction. We have broken these features down into principles of robot behavior, verbal communication, and nonverbal communication, while also considering factors that affect a person’s likelihood to adopt such technology. Our findings offer a starting point for refining social robots and & developing features that truly resonate with users.
