An ethical hangover: A young professional’s case

May 24, 2024 by Andrew Brei, Seppo J. Ovaska

< Engineering ethics is a misunderstood issue among practitioners. Although most electrical and computer engineers agree that general ethical principles should be followed, too few apply or are even familiar with the IEEE Code of Ethics. It is quite rare that the principles of engineering ethics are on the table when practitioners are making decisions and taking … [Read more...] about An ethical hangover: A young professional’s case

Designing your failure portfolio: Capacity building for lifelong learning

There are powerful quotes egging us on to embrace failure. LeBron James, a world-renowned basketball superstar, philanthropist, parent, and businessman, asserts, “You can’t be afraid to fail. It’s the only way you succeed.” Wayne Gretzky, a world-class hockey player, unequivocally states, “You miss 100% of shots you don’t take,” clearly conveying that one defaults to failure by … [Read more...] about Designing your failure portfolio: Capacity building for lifelong learning

Please feel free to fail

The most painful events in my life held the best lessons. I was eight when I lost my Dad. While rushing between clinics in two different cities, he crashed his car. My Dad was an ear, nose, and throat surgeon, a university professor, and a ground-breaking specialist in cochlear implants. I witnessed him consistently doing research while challenging himself with surgical cases … [Read more...] about Please feel free to fail

Success: Forged by values, decorated by failures

intertwine roads with success written on the sky

An event I experienced a few years ago tore down my perception of success and failure. It forced me to go through strong and stressful dilemmas, and I had to reconnect to my set of personal values and ethics to redefine success and recover. By sharing this event with you, just the way I experienced it, I hope you will understand how I felt and that it will help you understand … [Read more...] about Success: Forged by values, decorated by failures

An introduction to failure

June 28, 2022 by Greg Linton

Welcome to failure. It’s a concept that most of us are very familiar with via direct experience. At some point in our lives, we will encounter failure—often because of something we or someone else has done or, possibly, because of something that wasn’t done at all. Failure can have a profound and dramatic effect on our lives, individually and collectively. It can be a source of … [Read more...] about An introduction to failure

Privacy implications of facial recognition technology

Facial recognition technology (FRT) has experienced enormous growth and rapid deployment across different sectors of the society in recent years, mostly motivated by safety, security, and commercial applications. However, major privacy questions arise around this technology, and regulators are still working to provide clear set of rules governing its use. This paper focuses on privacy implications of FRT usage. Specifically, we first present the definition of FRT, followed by an analysis of the vulnerability and risks that can potentially arise and how they might be concerning in such context. Finally, we discuss efforts needed to mitigate privacy concerns related to FRT, from both technical and regulatory perspectives.
