June 28, 2022 by Kiran Jot Singh; Divneet Singh Kapoor; Balwinder Singh Sohi

As the number of robots is growing in our social environment, it is very important for them to understand and anticipate human behavior. One of the crucial skills for a robot is its navigation in the social environment. Several challenges are encountered when planning for the navigation of a robot in the presence of humans. It is very important for us to articulate these issues … [Read more...] about Robot navigation in the social environment: Design challenges

Neural networks in the pursuit of invincible counterdrone systems

January 1, 2022 by Jaakko Marin, Karel Pärlin, Micael Bernhardt and Taneli Riihonen

Image of a person using a hologram with hands.

The growing range of possibilities provided by the proliferation of commercial unmanned aerial vehicles, or drones, raises alarming safety and security threats. The efficient mitigation of these threats depends on authorities having defense systems to counter both accidentally trespassing and maliciously operated drones. To effectively counter such vehicles, defense systems … [Read more...] about Neural networks in the pursuit of invincible counterdrone systems

Characteristics of social robots: A framework for development

Social robots hold great promise for assisting both older adults with dementia and those in good health. Yet, little is known about how people want to interact with these robots. This article introduces a framework for the key features social robots should have, based on insights from a four-month study of how seniors engage with robots through conversation and interaction. We have broken these features down into principles of robot behavior, verbal communication, and nonverbal communication, while also considering factors that affect a person’s likelihood to adopt such technology. Our findings offer a starting point for refining social robots and & developing features that truly resonate with users.
