At some point by now, you have probably heard of Discord: a Voice over IP, instant messaging, and digital distribution platform with evergrowing popularity. Even large companies, such as Shopify, are adopting it and hosting weekly discussions through the platform to reach their clients directly and easily without the hassles of online meeting technology (WebEx, Microsoft Teams, and so on). The University of Manitoba IEEE (UMIEEE) Student Branch (SB) has been no exception. However, our SB has taken a major and significant step in using Discord as our instant messaging platform—the usage of custom bots. Essentially, Discord bots work like virtual assistants to enhance servers—they provide specific functions ranging from tasks like playing music and chat moderation to scheduling events. Throughout the past year, four of the five Discord bots added to our server have been custom created by our SB chair, Mahyar Mirrashed, and hosted on our virtual private server (VPS) through Vultr.
